juli – september 2009: Niños Hotel

In July 1996, Jolanda van den Berg departed for Cusco, Peru, for good. She went to help street children there. In 1998 she opened her first Niños Hotel. In 2002 she opened the second with the same goal: to use all the profits from the hotel to help extremely neglected children by providing them with daily meals, warm showers, medical and dental care, sports lessons and education. And to support the other projects run by the Niños Unidos Peruanos foundation.

Help for more than 600 children
The Niños hotels with the support of the many donors, enable 600 children to be provided with daily meals, warm showers and medical assistance. The charity has also arranged for 12 children, so far, to be placed with adoption families. The hotels and projects employ more than 60 Peruvians, who in turn financially support more than 60 Peruvian families.

Niños children’s restaurants and sports hall
Almost as important as a warm meal, clean shower and medical aid is the aim to improve the children’s self-image and, step by step, to teach them more social behaviour. This is achieved by giving the children their own, safe place where they are welcome six days a week. The children are also given sports lessons. Sport often works like a safety valve, allowing the children to let off steam while teaching them to work together and within rules.

AirCares
KLM also lives up to its social responsibilities at the destinations it serves. Because the aims of Niños Unidos Peruanos match those of the UN’s Millennium Development Goals, KLM AirCares has decided to support Niños Unidos Peruanos this quarter. In so doing we will stimulate developments that will structurally improve the lives of these children.
